I've just upgraded 12 Ubuntu workstations and got thid problem with two
of that.

Neither unchecking indexing nor starting thunderbird with and empty
profile solved the issue, i had to install thunderbird from the mozilla
ppa:

add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa
aptitude install thunderbird

This almost solved the issue: Now my users can get to work, but still
too slow; not suitable for a desktop enviroment.
