Meanwhile, I made several major updates to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ThunderbirdLightning, including
Maverick instructions to include both 32-bit and 64-bit instructions.  I
am running 64-bit Thunderbird 3.1 with latest Lightning (from contrib)
and it works fine for me.  Waiting for Micah...
