I can copy the paragraph from Thunderbird or Firefox and paste it into
gedit and every character appears.

In Firefox and Thunderbird a page being displayed sometimes has sections
with different fonts. Some sections will have every character appear as
expected, other sections will be missing certain characters.

A reboot clears the problem, then it comes crawling back. I'll speak
more as I learn more, or ask me questions so that I might dig into the
details of the problem for you.
