ubuntu 8.04 LT . Recently this past week and a half there have been a number of updates which I always do for both computers which both have this same 8.04 LT system. On the next boot-up both computers had the tool bars at the bottom switch positions. I have changed their positions back to the way they used to be but at each boot-up they switch so that the tool bar with the "applications" - "Places" - 'System" is on the bottom. no big deal I guess but a few days ago the computer at work put that tool bar I just mentioned on the right hand side of the screen in a vertical position. The computer at work has for the past week and a half been exiting a window when I carefully click on the minimize - button. The one at home does not. The one at home sometimes (sorry, intermittent issues are simply ugly) just doesn't connect to the modem and therefore also not to the internet. This I've noticed for several days. It may be that there are several issues afoot here. The common issue however is that the tool bars have reversed and want to stay that way, with one time the tool bar being vertical on the right. 
Now the computer at home I installed 8.04 from a disc in December 2009 and the one at work I installed earlier in January 2009 from the same disc. The one at home was so far behind in updates that it was given some sort of short cut from the update manager. Both have worked very well until just a week and a half ago. 
I have run clamav and it hasn't found a thing. Perhaps I might configure clamav better than how clamav first appeared after I installed it a long time ago. 
I suspect you'll want more information but I am no computer geek at all. So I'll try to tell you what I can. I appreciate your kindness and thank you for your help in advance.
