Alex Knoll's workaround did manage to give me the ability to have my
clicks register, but then I lost sound.  I tried some things from the
multimedia HOWTO on the ubuntu forums, with no luck.  So I eventually
went back to the non-free package and I'll just deal with not being able
to click, that's better than not having sound...
