This should be closed. After I reinstalled Thunderbird I had the same issue, and went and after searching Gmail's support, I found they do  NOT implement true POP email; they keep track themselves of what email clients access the account, and will not POP to multiple clients, without special configuration, and then only the last 30 days (see "Using POP on multiple clients or mobile devices",  http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=47948).
