I ran into this only once in the last month.

Since my first post, I have changed a lot of things. I have a more powerful PC (much faster disk, much faster cpu). I have upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), and therefore updated about everything.
Nevertheless, I ran into this again recently.

I therefore suppose the problem is caused by a race condition somewhere,
that is much more probable on a slow machine, with a lot of emails.
