I just tried it on Firefox/3.0.15 after having run "Update Manager" to
get the latest fixes. Still no workee.

I have had this issue for at least 6 months. Are there any plans to work
on it? It seems like a pretty significant issue. In any case, I resorted
to using XP where the issue doesn't seem to occur.

Ubuntu better. However, according to this report, you are not using the 
most recent version of this package for your Ubuntu release. Please 
upgrade to the most recent version (3.0.15) and let us know if you are

I am using Ubuntu 8.10 and running firefox 3.0.5. When I try to view
videos on you tube or any other website with streaming video, I have no
sound. I have sound with all other applications like dvds and music, but
no sound on videos. My plugins are up to date, but I still can not
figure it out.
