Are you able to reproduce this with a new profile?
Does the trash only show up after you move something to trash?
What version of thunderbird are you using? do you have any ubuntu system that is not 8.04 that you can test on?
I am unable to reproduce this with any of my IMAP and POP3 accounts.
Are your accounts IMAP?
