Strangely, I'm experiencing the same problem with Firefox 3.0.10 (without any add-ons), but on Windows XP and without gzip.
It happens only with Firefox and https (20-40% of the redirects hang for 6-12s).
It does not matter whether I use 301, 302 or 303 redirects.
Without https and with other browsers (IE, Safari, Opera, Chrome) I have no problems.
