I still have the same problem.
I have Ubuntu 8.10 with Thunderbird 2.0.0.21 
Java version "1.6.0_10" / Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-b33)
I have just installed the latests lightning 0.9 (build 2008091718).
The 'New calendar' menu option is grayed out (right mouse button in calendar plane).
Another strange thing is the 'calendar' option in the menu bar, shows the standard 'message' menu from thunderbird.

First I've tried a new profile: nothing changed
Second I installed libstdc++5: no luck there either.

Any help appreciated,
