Actually, I take it back, I just solved it for my computer. Apparently the typing delay was just an extreme instance of the generally slow video performance of my Intel 865g (82865g) processor with the Mesa drivers. I'm trying to figure out how to switch to the Intel drivers with Intrepid, but in the meantime simply adding:
        Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
	Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
Under the "Device Section" to my xorg.conf made a HUGE difference, and now there is no delay!
Which reminds me, I should note that the bug that makes it so the default video drivers assigned to the Intel 865g have such awful performance is a pretty nasty one. I almost gave up on Ubuntu on this computer, until I found the helpful forum post suggesting the above change. Sadly, I'm sure a lot of people will just give up when the video performance makes the whole system run so slow...
Thanks!
Jesse
