Re-hello and thank you for investigating this case so thoroughly.

I have now re-installed Firefox 3.0.11 and it works very well. It has none of the problems that plague my FF 3.5.
Anyway, I report here the requested info.

$ ls -ld /usr/lib/firefox-3.0*
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 2009-07-18 13:13 /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.11

$ readlink -f /usr/bin/firefox
/usr/lib/firefox-3.0.11/firefox.sh

$ readlink -f /usr/bin/firefox-3.5
/usr/lib/firefox-3.5.1/firefox.sh
