Just to say that I had a very similar error with the same first line:

*** glibc detected *** /usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird-bin: free():
invalid next size (fast):

I found that the problem was caused by the Tango Icons Theme - once I
uninstalled it received emails perfectly without freezing/crashing
