I recently upgraded a Dell Inspiron with factory installed
Ubuntu 7.10 to Ubuntu 8.04.  During the upgrade I had a 
serious problem with a SATA vs. USB race condition that
was fixed per this page:

That is probably *not* relevant to this question but I mention
it for completeness.

The problem that I am having now is that when performing
administrative tasks via the GUI, the "Enter your password
to perform administrative tasks" window never appears!

E.g. If I click on the "updates are available" icon,
update-manager starts up, but if I select "install" the
app just hangs (the password window never appears, although
there is some disk activity).

I can sudo in a terminal and start the update-manager
 from  the command line, and then the install process
completes properly although I am not prompted for a
password by the GUI.

In a similar vein, I could not install flash (no, that's not
a feature) in firefox without following the same procedure:
sudo in a terminal, start firefox with su perms from the command
line and the plug-in installed correctly.

Ideas?
