Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. The proper way to upgrade
Firefox in Ubuntu is to use Synaptic or another package manager. The
new version of Firefox 3.5 will be released in Jaunty shortly. Since
Jaunty is a stable release, we cannot change the default browser except
for security patches. Therefore, we cannot force an upgrade to Firefox
3.5. If you wish, you can install Firefox 3.5 alongside Firefox 3.0 in
Jaunty. In Karmic, it will be the default browser. Please feel free to
report any other bugs you may find.
