Indeed the problem persists.  Now even Galeon will not play a midi.

Firefox in Dapper Drake was tamed by the creation of a little wrapper
script, an alteration in about:config to not hide downloads without an
extension and a change to the specified action when faced by a midi
file.  It worked.

Currently, midi files will play via Timidity and Exaile.

So far I have not tried this Hardy Heron.
