I found a fix to the above problem at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/155759
I followed the directions in the comment by:   Bieleke  wrote on 2008-11-10:  (permalink)  and everything is working now.
But why the preference settings aren't linked to the account settings I don't know... they seem redundant.
