Further I can repro both my intel G45 desktop machine and on my radeon
9600 desktop machine so it's not specific to one particular graphics
driver. The exact graphics cards for these machines are:

mnemo at zueco:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AP [Radeon 9600] [1002:4150]

mnemo at kingfish:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2e22] (rev 03)
