John,
This may work (though I take no responsability):
  1.Shut off and 
restart your computer (the old fashioned way by pulling the plug if 
Firefox blocks everything)
  2. Restart your computer
  3. Go to 
synaptic package manager under system-aadministration
  4. Type 
"Firefox" in the search field
  5. Right click on Firefox
  6. Select 
reinstall
  7. Select apply changes
You will lose youur bookmarks if 
you have not saved them. You will probably have to reinstall add-ons, 
but the problem started with me by installing certain themes, so be 
careful with add-ons.
