I follwed your directions with this result:
In Update Manager, I make a “check” for new updates before I click
“Update” to download the 7.10 release.

     2. I see the release notes in a new window and I click “upgrade”

     3. 62 files are downloaded

     4. A new Window pops up with the text: “No valid mirror found

While scanning your repository information no mirror entry for the
upgrade was found. This can happen if you run a internal mirror or if the
mirror information is out of date.

Do you want to rewrite your 'sources.list' file anyway? If you choose
'Yes' here it will update all 'feisty' to 'gutsy' entries.

If you select 'no' the update will cancel.”

I chose “Yes” to continue with the upgrade.

A new Window pops up: “Third party sources disabled

Some third party entries in your sources.list were disabled. You can
re-enable them after the upgrade withthe 'software-properties' tool or
your package manager.”

No options offered but, to close the window, which I do

The update progresses a second or two, then a new window:

“Error during update

A problem occured during the update. This is usually some sort of
network problem, please check your network connection and retry.”

Inside the “Error during update-window" is the following text:

After closing the widow, Update Manager is no longer visible

Question: Is it less messy to secure the data in the Home directory and
install 8.04 release from scratch?
