I also have this problem with intrepid with all updates and ppp
connection over bluetooth. I have /etc/ppp/peers/ppp0, and pon and poff
commands are working correctly, but network manager always thinks I'm
not connected.

If this is fixed, could you please provide working example of
/etc/network/interfaces, /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf?
