If this were an issue with the security model instead of FF, then how
come the links work when copied into the location bar?

The way I deal with this bug is this:

1. Un-install firefox-3.0-gnome-support package
2. in about:config I add the string "network.protocol-handler.app.smb" with the value "/usr/bin/nautilus"

However this work around gets broken after every update of firefox
(including update of plugins). I couldnt find the string
"network.gnomevfs.supported-protocols"
