Yes, my bad, the issue is with the horizontal scroll bar.

I take exception with the explanation that the designers "have surely
taken into account the screen resolutions they want to support when they
designed the site layout". They haven't, but should take into account
the default screen resolution of the most recent release of Ubuntu out
of the box with a reasonably large screen; that is precisely the bug
here.

** Changed in: ubuntu-website
       Status: Invalid => New

** Summary changed:

- www.ubuntu.com has vertical scroll bar
+ www.ubuntu.com has horizontal scroll bar

** Description changed:

On a newly installed 8.10 with a fairly large screen (1680x1050), the
default window size in Firefox is too narrow to accommodate the contents
- of http://www.ubuntu.com/ resulting in a vertical scroll bar, which for
- good reason is considered a somewhat grave usability problem.
+ of http://www.ubuntu.com/ resulting in a horizontal scroll bar, which
+ for good reason is considered a somewhat grave usability problem.

- IMNSHO the site should be redesigned to render without a vertical scroll
- bar when viewed in the default browser out of the box.
+ IMNSHO the site should be redesigned to render without a horizontal
+ scroll bar when viewed in the default browser out of the box.
+
+ Edit: horizontal, not vertical
