This is not an Intel graphics specific problem as suggested in the
thread linked to by the previous comment as I am seeing it with an 8800
GTS both with and without Compiz.

The GUIMark benchmark at
http://www.craftymind.com/factory/guimark/GUIMark_HTML4.html really
illustrates this problem clearly. Under Windows XP I get 10 fps, but in
Ubuntu 8.04 I get less than one frame per second.
