I downloaded Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, now running Ubuntu 8.04 and things
changed completely. The window with the question if the downloaded file
should be opened doesn't exist any more in this context. You are asked
to indicate the place where to store the file - and this terminates the
action after downloading the file.

This issue can be closed.
