It seems that Firefox for Linux just has a bad implementation, but that GDK provides the needed primitives to fix the problem. See: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=382392#c34  and it's follow-up

As a work-around you can run Firefox in Windows XP on vmware on Ubuntu
8.04 and it will be WAY FASTER than using it directly in Ubuntu! :-p
