Sorry for not following up, but I discovered that my newly upgraded
system has a more serious problem, as it resets all by itself, sometimes
after few minutes from start. I suspect something broken related to my
ATI Radeon video card.

Thank you for the instructions on how to diagnose this problem. However,
since it will take time to do so, I will try to follow up on this issue
as soon as I can, but not immediately.

By the way, "while you can run "killall firefox" even on a nonfunctional
console, you cannot run ps aux | grep firefox" blindly :)
