Any bookmarks added during an FF3 session vanish after the session is
closed. Like gerard and magripli, my FF3 is not an upgrade so
JaSaavedra's fix doesn't help me.

Suggests that permissions are to blame. But my user already has read and write permissions on "bookmarks.html", so I don't think that's a problem.
