** Description changed:
Binary package hint: human-icon-theme
This is a side effect of the otherwise appreciated fact that Firefox 3
uses stock/theme GTK icons: the folder icons displayed on the bookmarks
toolbar have a cramped appearance at their current size (16x16). The
resulting look has low definition, and does not convey the idea of a
folder as immediately as FF2's yellow folder icons, especially on small
displays with lots of pixels. This is caused mostly by the white area
toward the top, and the 1px white(ish) highlight that makes the border
look "creased" due to the low resolution.
I'm not sure where this needs to be fixed, if it can, so I'm opening
tasks in both firefox-3.0 and human-icon-theme. Possible fixes I can
think of now are:
1) Redo the 16x16 folder icon in human-icon theme. Doesn't look feasible
for Hardy since there's little time left, all associated icons would
need to be redone too, and a complete redesign is planned for the
following release.
2) Make Firefox use the 24x24 folder icon, which has much better
definition. This would not look bad with the default font size we use,
and arguably accentuates the separation of the items better, but the
- counter argument might be that it's too big. An obvious problem is
- incompatibility with the sizes of other icons (such as the Home icon and
- favicons) on the toolbar; they'll probably be need to be 24x24 as well.
+ counter argument might be that it's too big, to the point of competing
+ with the Back/Forward buttons (which are also orange) for attention. An
+ obvious problem is incompatibility with the sizes of other icons (such
+ as the Home icon and favicons) on the toolbar; they'll probably be need
+ to be 24x24 as well.
3) As a compromise, make Firefox use an interim size, such as 22x22
(there's no folder icon at this size in the theme now).
