I'm now using:
$ apt-cache policy firefox
firefox:
  Installed: 3.0+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

I now tried again before doing the suggested tweaks.
It worked, thanks for the help.

Seems as if a restart or the update to the release version helped.
