I had the exact same problem. I fixed it my going into my
/<user>/.mozilla/firefox/<funnyname>.default directory and pasting in my
bookmarks. After I did that, no more problems.

Since that first time, I've had occasion to do a reinstall. I backed up
that entire directory first, then pasted back in when I was back up and
running. No problems.
