Could you start thunderbird via a terminal?
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal. Type "thunderbird" and enter) and
paste the output here.

Also we will appreciate if you could tell us the following,
Does the thunderbird close every time? 
Is there any specific mail message that causes the crash?
Do you have desktop effects turn on?
