I also have this problem in recent versions of Firefox. I never
experienced it in Firefox 2.

It may be related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/216699 though
I do not necessarily see any particular message in the status bar when
this happens.

This bug is nearly show-stopping for my use of Firefox and I've been
falling back on Epiphany recently which does not appear to exhibit the
issue.
