I have a similar problem. Is not clear what cause it, but I think Firefox is part of the problem.
I started this year 2008, for sure.

I can't even look for the cause of the problem, because the system just
stop answering the keyboard.  But later on, I can't see the error on the
logs or /var/crash, etc.

I'm sorry I can't provide more details.
