I have had this happen in two seperate instances now. On my own
machine, under my windows partition (I know you guys won't like this but
I'm trying to demonstrate it's likely firefox itself and not other
software interactions) I downgraded from Firefox-3.1b2pre.en-US.win64 to
Firefox-3.0.5pre.en-US.win64.

At this piont:
1. my url bar works, but displays whatever i type across all tabs. doesn't update if i follow links
2. navigation buttons are disabled
3. not even hotkeys to move forward or back work

Also, on a Fedora release 9 machine in a school computer lab which I help maintain, a user showed me that
her firefox is behaving exactly as you describe. These were semi-recently updated to 3.0.4, and she has:
1. no url bar response
2. no search bar response
3. no response to ctrl-alt-J or the "add exception" button
4. home button works, and can search and click to a site

->had to remove a lock file before firefox would start
->tried removing the profile entirely after this problem showed up, didn't make a difference
->other profiles tried so far with same software versions seem ok

any other input you'd like just ask
