Thanks for your reply. When I do this command in root mode, here's the
output:

root at gormenghast:~# ls -l ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/
total 8
drwx------ 5 root root 4096 2008-03-21 07:19 hce3jktp.default
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 94 2008-03-21 06:41 profiles.ini

And when I try it with a regular user terminal:

ls -l ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/
ls: cannot open directory /home/steerpike/.mozilla-thunderbird/: Permission
denied

So, obviously you've identified the culprit. I realize now I can start
Thunderbird with "thunderbird" in a sudo terminal, and it remembers the
profile no problem.

This is the same problem I'm having with a program called Miro,
incidentally. So, I'll do some googling and figure out how to correctly
change permissions. But this must be happening to other people, too, no?

Thanks again
John
