Might have fixed this one. I logged into kde desktop to see if firefox worked OK. It did. Closed firefox from a non-maximised window.
When I next logged into gnome, firefox behaved normally. It did not hog the desktop and I had window controls. 
It looks like first use of firefox 3 on gnome had a problem with initial window size. It was permanently maximised.
