Hello John, I see this with firefox 3 too, either downloaded from
ubuntu or the mozilla website.
running it with MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 does NOT fix the problem, just a
little performance increase.

I also think it is a firefox bug, since it happens with nvidia and ati hardware.
upstream has not yet replied to by bug.
