The fix failed to fix it here i had to set fonts to 12 this is with libgnome2-common 2.20.0-1ubuntu2
I use 1600X1200 and the fonts are way too small still if i run xdpyinfo i get:

xdpyinfo | less shows dimensions:    1600x1200 pixels 
 (323x252 millimeters) resolution:    126x121 dots per inch

shouldnt that be more like 100X100 DPI?
there is no way that i found to change that setting even with DPI set in apperance to 96
