I got this same error every time I attempted to open FF:

ben at ben-desktop:~$ firefox -safe-mode

(gecko:13540): Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Times 12'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Removing the Times Truetype font I had installed fixed the problem, and
now Firefox starts, though obviously this is not the ideal solution.
