In Gutsy, the Desktop directory is translated in different languages ; but it seems that Firefox uses only "~/Desktop" as default.
For example, in french, the desktop directory is "~/Bureau" (french translation of "Desktop"). Firefox will try to download by default on "~/Desktop" and not in "~/Bureau". but ~/Desktop doesn't exists, so Firefox will download in ~/. 

For the new Ubuntu users, this can be disorienting because Firefox shows
it will download in the Desktop, but nothing will appear because it is
in the home directory.
