[Bug 165201] Thunderbird new mail sound doesn't play, just noise

I have ubuntu 7.10 sounds seem to work fine in other applications.
However in mozilla when i set the new mail sound to a .wav file and test
it by hitting the play button all i get is a quick burst of noise.
almost as though it doesn't play the song at the proper rate
