I don't now aim.mail but I suspect that their server keeps sent items in
a "Sen' folder and that the mail client 5Thunderbird) also does this.

You can ask Thunderbird to not place a copy of the mail in the "Sent" folder for an email account by going to Edit->Account Settings->Copies and Folders->
uncheck "place a copy in" for the "When sending messages, automatically"

could you try this and report back whether this solved the issue or not
?
