Possible solution.

I deleted these files that firefox installs automatically via the extension popup dialog.
~/.mozilla/plugins
flashplayer.xpt  libflashplayer.so

Then I installed via,
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

and the frequent crashing has not happened in firefox and epiphany while
playing flash videos
