Holy guacamole!  The latest version seems to have resolved this problem.
I'm able to login and navigate normally.

 2.0.0.2+0dfsg-0ubuntu0.6.10

Thanks very much for following up - I had frankly given up hope on this
one and was doing it all via a virtual machine with Windows.
