Yes, there are different video cards on the two systems.  The (good)
desktop system has an Nvidia card and the (bad) laptop has ATI.  I don't
know how to tell if 3D is enabled.  Also I don't know how to get further
info on the Firefox installations, other than what's on the About popup.
By X do you mean the xorg.conf file?  Sorry for my ignorance, I've been
using Ubuntu for about six months...
