I have the same problem. My net connection is via a 1km wireless link - the speed is great but latency is bit of an issue I get the problem under 2 situations:
1.) If I leave the PC for a while with more than one tab open in Firefox, when I return a few hours later Firefox's CPU utilization is anything from 37% to 85% - with Firefox not doing anything & no flash, java, etc applets loaded.
2.) If I open more than 2 tabs with flash video embedded (eg Youtube) CPU utilization easily goes up to 90% or higher - even with all videos finished playing.
I'm running Feisty with latest patches & Firefox/2.0.0.4 (Ubuntu-feisty)
