hm... Removing ~/.mozilla/firefox/*/extensions.* and letting Firefox regenerate them solves this problem. I guess the problem was in extensions.rdf, which contains some references to itself, such as here:
<RDF:Description RDF:about="rdf:#$UYk5R"

Maybe it's not really that much of a bug after all..
