when running the backtrace found that the problem is from libcairo.so.2
- but there was no libcairo with debug symbols available(dbgsym library.
When hunting around for bugs where libcairo crashes other apps, found a
bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libcairo/+bug/123281. and
found that some rouge fonts can cause this issue - I had a bad version
of Monaco font(which was set as the system/gnome default monospaced
font) - removing it and fc-cache -fv solved the problem for me.
